Reno, Nevada (Associated Poets):

We glanced furtively at headlines
between stops on our tour of the facility.

I flipped past the Bin Laden tape
searching for the weather channel.

Our Turkish and Greek colleagues compared notes
on international basketball.

A high-speed car chase of a woman
suspected of robbing something
or other on the local news
I remembered the next day
was boring.

We discussed Arafat in the same breath
with how was your breakfast and
when is your flight out.

Events in the world were unimportant when
they demonstrated the huge hydraulic shake table
used to simulate earthquakes.

A bevy of high school kids was on their own tour.
A girl with green hair's T-shirt read
"mean people really suck".

There were no televisions playing news channels
at the Casino.

The hotel T.V. has a built-in clock
which is so compelling and informative
that I leave the set off.
