the price of gas is licking
at $3 a gallon in the U.S.
no relief in sight

W., forward-thinker that he is, rejects
short-term fixes:
price controls
or cutting gas taxes

short-term?  think forward;
in a million years there will be
no George W. Bush,
no United States,
no dollars,
nothing we haven't tried
to burn

at this rate
ice ages will have come
and gone
and species with them

and language?
it will be a certain
temperature at any moment
something will rain from
some kind of sky
the sun will still burn and
the wind blow
ants will still burrow
through whatever

George W. Bush,
how long is your term?

for those who haven't
drenched our consciences in crude
and offered the ashes to Exxonn
every second is
an eternity
