NEW YORK TIMES EXCERPT:
Negotiating the Darkness, Fortified by Poets' Strength
The events of Sept. 11 nailed home my convictions
that lyric poetry dispenses more relief
during catastrophic times than perhaps any art form.
EMERICK COMMENT ON EXCERPT:
Notice nailing of home to prior convictions
(Newly found convictions would not be made of wood)
Notice the nailing as in, perhaps, a crucifixion --
An uncommon criminal is commonly executed by state;
Notice that poetry dispenses relief during catastrophe
(If it be of a lyric kind but not, perhaps, otherwise)
And, perhaps, not upon any other special occasions...
This poetic blessing from nailing convictions home,
of lyric relief for catastrophe, is comparative praise,
Not good and virtuous in itself, but only, perhaps,
Better than any, better than all other art form.
