[Newspoetry] market shoots up

The stock market shot up today, and,
having gotten its fix,
sank back into the empty-eyed stupor
that is an addict's life.

There being no treatment programs in its area,
its mind is sure to once more turn to how to get enough cash
to finance another binge. You see,

the more the market shoots up, the more cash it needs
to achieve the same "high". So today's 5% higher is tomorrow's
3% higher. And when it's a choice between getting high
and following standard accounting practices, an addict
in effect has no choice.

Many rehabilitation counselors
think that the only way a hard-core addict can learn to stop
is by hitting bottom. Reading the giddy prose in today's NYT,
that bottom looks pretty far away.
