[Newspoetry] don't piss off independents

don't piss off independents
they're stronger than you think
republicans and democrats
can vanish in a blink

control of congress teeters
on a margin pencil-thin
because the parties are the same
no matter how they spin

which means the vote is split as if
we all are flipping coins
and thus control can toggle when
a single member joins

or quits or dies or is appointed
by some irate pol --
who was that wrestler they voted in
up in St. Paul?

don't piss off independents
who understand that power
is theirs to exercise at last
in this, their finest(?) hour
