[Newspoetry] submission

hide my head

I have retreated once more

ignoring the newspapers

skipping over television news shows

watching inane comedies

reading murder mysteries

the world rushes headlong

toward its inevitable fate

and I cannot bear to watch

and I cannot stop it

or even slow it in its course

I can only write words

which will have no effect

not change one mind

or bother one conscience 

when minds are set in their ways

and others listen

not to reason

but to the designs of their desire

there is no stopping them

fifty years from now

it probably will not matter

the world will have gone on

and other crises will threaten

so I read my books

and watch my comedies

hide my head in the sand

pretend it doesn't matter

that millions may die

to satisfy one man's vanity
