[Newspoetry] washington post wants to own your newspoems

How could ever I resist?
I'm not all that keen on
defining poetry as rhymes,
or reasons, or sensations.
Oh sure, I like to sing
a song with a rhyme in it,
but that's because I sing
so badly, or carry no tunes --
a rhyme aids my evasions
and lets me escape truth.

A good poem has fine imagery,
is vivid and terse, as swell,
unlike Longfellow's Hiawatha,
or an Ancient Mariner Rhyme,
or even, say, Milton's tale,
or many of Shakesphere plays.

If a rhyme happens, then,
let it be but by accident,
but I like alliteration,
or a hissing onomatopoeia.
A word does not say itself,
words speak native tongues.

I prefer accent and space,
a doctrine of associations,
in an accident of attention,
a tree sliced in paper cuts,
a clay of wedge-baked words,
a stone-carved poetic speech.

Let it be like news of poetry,
this refried poetry of news,
a contradiction as proposed,
as natural as it was opposed.
Send me shoes; I've feats afoot.
