FROM WASHINGTONPOST.COM "NEWSPOETRY" CONTEST

"But first a few rules to lend us some cred
If not news-related, your ode won't be read
So study the headlines, columns and briefs
Newsmakers, pundits, commanders-in-chief
Get the idea? Relate to the news...
Make your rhyme sing and we'll be sure to use"

"What Derrida derides each step he takes
when Derrida decides must retrace fakes."

If poetic news must rhyme, almost,
you can bet it bounds, as a boast,
the same bragging liars each week
who praise too much their whining streak.

Rhyme must have its reason, afoot,
running alongside the rutted lane
where wheels have mired down and put
impresses of wakes in their train.

Sound horns, as true; blow bugles, too!
Let all the brass celebrate bronze,
there is no truth, he responds,
when there is no lie to see through.

A riddle is what a rhyme walks
when it evokes memory's talks,
a garrulous old man who balks,
when any murdering thief stalks.

Opposing the forces of light
is no job for a shiny glass --
mirrors see glad face, not bad ass,
to show slick surface of deep fright.

News was caught and wrapped in words,
fishmongering's an art of net,
News was printed freely, like birds,
that splash, high-flying, fish too wet.

Me, I don't like the contrived
which rhyme has mated and wived
as divorce is parting sorrow,
read the news, cuckold tomorrow.

Theirs is the force, that art will hide,
their truths, in our heads, will collide.
Pride inside rides out to decide
how they tried, outcried and defied.
