[Newspoetry] Frivolity

You can't be an artist,

Of any kind, not even a poet,

If you think your art is lacking,

In its statements about existence.

Art is full of your values,

Expressed as fully as you can.

Art is full of you,

Or else it is empty,

As a vacuum.

Oh, I know, there is a vacuum,

That sucks up dirt and debris,

And collects it in a pouch,

For you to toss out,

A tangled mass of fibers, hair,

Solidified in dust,

Fragmented, small objects.

You've got to be serious about art,

In order for others to take it seriously,

Or else, they'll see it as frivolous,

And see you as the wanton frivolity you are,

As if you really have no right

To oppose conformism

In all its oppressions.

Yes, what opposes art

Really hates the idea of play,

Hates the idea of an idea,

Looking for a new way to be,

When the old one is just fine,

Already jaded into acceptance,

Almost tolerated and still rejected.
