Dangerous Persons Writing

A recent correspondent alleges:

Writers are dangerous persons;

Poets, too, even you newspoets.

You bother all of the people;

You won't leave them alone;

All you do is promote sense,

Whether it is of bodily things,

Or of ideas that roil thinking.

You don't do anything really -

Nothing useful, like real work,

When you spend time writing.

Go outdoors, do something,

Get away from that steel desk;

Click no more on your keyset,

Leave those pages unprinted,

Leave those words unspoken.

Ah, dangerous persons we are!

Someday, a witty person says,

We'll find ways to cure madness,

And all you writers will be healed.

Meanwhile, I shall read no more.

(And, in passing, we'll make laws

Against harassing us as readers.

In South Dakota it surely passes!)
