[Newspoetry] On the Go-Go, the Go-to-Go

I know, I know.

There are millions upon millions -

People who believe and worship,

People who gather on Sundays,

(and sometimes on some other special days)

Sharing their drink and food,

Communing and worshipping,

Chanting together, prayerfully,

While ushers collect money from them,

And they listen and watch,

In fear and dread, ever hopeful,

Believing they shall be redeemed,

Their faith justified by salvation

>From the hells of shame and defeat.

I refer, of course, bombastically,

To the Super Bowl and other heroic cults,

Which have to them nothing to warrant belief.

Oh, sure, I've seen the crowds and the games -

Well, vicariously, anyway, if not personally -

And I am quite sure that all the fans believe,

Really believe that all this matters a damn.

Meanwhile, someplace else in the world,

Bombs are falling like gentle rain from heaven,

Injustice rules the lives ruined by bomb-fall,

Cruel and merciless, inhuman and deadly -

While a sportily dressed cheerleader,

A sportsman, in every name but good sport,

A childish idiot President dreams of victory,

In the Super Bowl Stadium of the World.

(Go Bears, Go Colts, Go-Go-Go-to hell.)
