Amazing lies and other self-deceptions

Among the lies being told by Republicans, today, is this whopper:

If the war in Iraq fails, the Middle East will be destabilized

(and that would mean terrorist attacks upon the United States).

Well, terrorist attacks on the United States are happening, everyday, in Iraq,
already. Isn't that perfectly obvious?

And, isn't Iraq already a failed matter? Isn't the Middle East already
destabilized by the US war of intervention into Iraq, to begin with?

I mean, after all, it just isn't right to blame the terrorists for the vast and
continuing failures of US foreign policy in the Middle East.

Oh, I know, it's all a lie that many would rather tell or believe, than to face
the truth: we have no just cause and no true business being in Iraq. We can't
unfail Iraq, after we failed them, by destroying their previous civil
government, morally bad as those leaders may have been.

The bloody war in Iraq has but one possible outcome: a partition, after a bloody
civil war.

Nothing will destabilize the Middle East - it was unstable to begin with - due
to decades of Great Power proxy interventions in the region. And, the whirlwind
we reap today is the product of all those proxy wars - vast poverty amid an
informed and hostile population, easily directed and diverted to simplified
dichotomies of friends and enemies.

And, some days, I even think the simplifications are right, on a first-order
magnitude of scaled effects.

But, to acknowledge that would be to pose the Great Question: why are in Iraq,
or elsewhere, anyway? Oh, some will say because terrorists attacked us, on
9/11. But, that is a convenient blind, to ignore the history of why they wanted
to attack us, in the first place. Enemies don't happen by accident: making
friends is quite different from making money. The latter is more likely to make
you enemies, when the ways that you do business do not increase the well-being
of those other people and merely enrich a tiny aristocratic elite of sultans and
other potentates and their police states, whether here in the US or in the
Middle East.

But, you all know that. I know you do.

Still, their lies still goad me. I have not grown numb. I still speak out,
pointless as such speech is.
