10 Colleges Announce Events to Mark the Anniversary of
September 11
Alverno College and Creighton University will each hold an
interfaith memorial service.
As part of freshman orientation at Franklin & Marshall
College, first-year students will perform service projects
dedicated to the victims and rescue workers.
Lafayette University will hold a ceremony in which students
will retire a quilt that was assembled by the campus community
in response to the attacks.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology will introduce a new
course, "Out of Ground Zero: Catastrophe and Memory," which
will compare responses to September 11 with responses to the
bombings of Hiroshima, Japan, and Dresden, Germany, during
World War II.
New York University will sponsor a ceremony at the time that
the attacks took place, a candlelight vigil that evening, and
special counseling services throughout the day.
Saint Michael's College is having a labyrinth painted on its
campus green, and visitors will be invited to navigate it in
contemplative thought.
Southwestern University's Sarofim School of Fine Arts will
offer a memorial performance that will feature the artworks,
music, and theater of its faculty and students.
The University of Cincinnati will hold an overnight vigil, on
the night before September 11, featuring music, readings,
prayers, and reflections.
The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor will sponsor a
symposium, "Terrorism and Globalization: Looking Back, Looking
Forward," in which speakers will discuss how international
humanitarian law, civil liberties, and American Muslims have
changed in the past year.
