Short documentaries and films followed by discussion

Thursday, November 13, 2003, 7-10pm, 404 Illini Union

Kings by Niva Dorell, a short film 15 min.
An African-American man functioning in a stuffy, white-collar world is confronted with a friend from his past.  When the friend shows up at his office, a past left far behind catches up with him.

New Year by Valerie Zoe, a short documentary 23 min.
This video uses hand-drawn illustrations and found footage to explore the conflicts of a child caught between her Chinese American background and the 
stereotypes and expectations created by mainstream American film and television images.

Beyond Black and White by Nisma Zaman, a short documentary 26 min.
This film is a personal exploration of the filmmaker’s bicultural heritage in which she relates her experiences to those of five other women from various biracial backgrounds. In lively interviews and group discussions these women reveal how they have been influenced by images of women in American media, how racism has affected them, and how their families and environments have shaped their racial identities.

Fated to Be Queer by Paulo Bautista, a short documentary 25 min.  
This documentary illuminates issues and concerns for the Filipino American Gay community. Four men discuss topics including cultural homophobia, racism, 
images of gay men of color, and the sexual politics between rice queens and sticky rice.

Long Distance by Doug Seok, UIUC student, a short film 5 min
Is it worth it to drop everything in your life and to start a new one? A short film discussing the concepts of Korean, Korean American, and American 
identity.
