At tonight's AWARE meeting I suggested the possibility of AWARE working with Sharon Dorsey and others to bring this exhibit to CU. I hope that AWARE might consider fronting the $1000 which the American Friends Service Committee asks for in order to bring the exhibit - with a commitment from the working group to earn back at least $500. Just to give perspective, our Veteran's Day event passed the hat and raised just under $350.

Here's an excerpt from the website describing the indoor and outdoor components of the program. I really didn't do it justice in the AWARE meeting. We would have to explore how we might customize the program for our location.
(See http://www.afsc.org/eyes/about-the-exhibit.htm - the homepage for the exhibit for more info.)

The Eyes Wide Open exhibition is a multimedia, multisensory journey through the words, images, and sounds of the Iraq war. Visitors move through a vivid memorial to the war’s soldier and civilian victims and a compelling outline of what the war is costing us at home.

The Chicago Office of American Friends Service Committee agrees to provide the full Eyes Wide Open exhibit including:

Indoor Exhibition

Panels: Eighteen 4’x7’ panels of information, much like a museum exhibit, including a timeline of the U.S. relationship with Iraq and the events leading up to war
TV Grid: 10 TVs and 8 DVD players, looping images of the war
Photos: large photos of Iraqi civilians
Iraqi Soldier Memorial: consisting of a single pair of dirty shoes on a pedestal with signage
Image Box: Video installation of images of the war not seen on U.S. newscasts but viewed by the world through the international media
Cost of War Computer: Computer ticking away the U.S. military spending on the war in Iraq
Jeffrey Lucey Suicide Display: Display of Jeffrey Lucey’s uniform and family memorabilia donated by the Lucey family to highlight the high number of Iraq War veterans who have committed suicide
Action Area Box: focused on drawing visitors to further explore avenues for civic participation and education
   Tool Box
   Necessary signage

Outdoor Exhibition
(This part of the exhibit can also be installed indoors.)

Boots: a memorial to US troops who have died in the Iraq war, consisting of as many pairs of military boots (well over 1000), tagged with their names
Shoes: a memorial to Iraqi civilians killed during the war consisting of 1000 pairs of shoes, each representing 16 deaths
Wall of Names: 3 eight-foot panels and stands, listing the names of all known Iraqi civilians killed

We will also provide:

A 24- to 28-foot truck, which will stay with the exhibit, and requires secure parking.
Trained staff personnel to help set up the exhibit
Phone support and advice for setting up the exhibit
A postcard and poster that you can add your own information to and have printed.
A media release for you to send to your media contacts.
Various literature for distribution on site
