[Peace-discuss] Re: Save the Sierra Club from Hostile Takeover

As a long time Sierra Club member, I have long believed that the Club 
was putting its head in the sand on the question of population. They 
finesse the issue in the USA by saying that it's an international 
issue, so let's not muddy the waters by just talking about the U.S. But 
if you are interested in the U.S. environment, you have to meet the 
problem of population here as well as elsewhere, and come up with a 
program. They have not, and that frustrates many who see the natural 
environment become degraded by a growing population and sprawl. So, 
petition candidates have been put forward to change these policies.

A question to be honestly answered: Should we advocate or allow 
unlimited immigration into the country?

I resent being associated with far-right organizations-- The Sierra 
Club establishment is trying to smear all those interested in having a 
population policy in the U.S. They are going all out, and this letter 
from MoveOn is one manifestation of it.

Incidentally, this same Sierra Club leadership, led by Carl Pope, was 
too timid to condemn the Iraq war at its beginning, and tried to 
squelch dissident opinion in Chapters on the matter. The war was no 
business of theirs, they said. The destruction of Iraq was not an 
environmental matter of importance. They were cowards in the face of 
jingoism.
