I just sent the following statement to the listserv of the American
Library Association Council. Should AWARE do anything right now?

Note that I will be away from tomorrow through the middle of next week.

>
>So it comes to this. We now have a lead story in today's New York
>Times explaining how the Justice Dept and the CIA have LEGALIZED
>torture techniques. As a profession that has some small influence
>on what happens in this country, when are we going to stand up and
>say no more? President Carla Hayden's courageous work on the USA
>Patriot Act shows that we do get national attention on critical
>issues.
>
>I ask the ALA Executive Board to issue a statement.
