You may be familiar with the cases of Martell Miller and Patrick Thompson, two local African American men who were arrested recently and charged with "eavesdropping". They are the founders of a grassroots group - VEYA - that, among other things, has been videotaping police stops. They do not interfere with police activity, but only attempt to observe and document police treatement of those in the African American community. As a result of their efforts, they have now been charged with "eavesdropping" and a documentary that they produced with footage of these police stops has been confiscated before it could be shown on UPTV. For more info see their website at www.veya.org.

You can support Patrick Thompson and Martell Miller - and inform yourself about police treatment of the African American community - by participating in two upcoming events:

- You can attend Martell's court appearance at 3:15 pm this Wednesday the 8th, in courtroom F at the Courthouse in Urbana. Please note that the time has been moved from 3:30 to 3:15.
- You can attend a showing of the the documentary that Martell and Patrick produced on Champaign Police traffic stops at one of the two following two showings:

4pm , Saturday, Septmber 11 Auditorium of the Champaign Public Library
1pm, Sunday, September 12 at the Art Theatre in downtown Champaign

Please spread the word!
