Here's the minutes from Sunday's meeting. If you have an idea for next week's agenda or if you'd like to facilitate, drop me a line: carolinskeep at yahoo.com

25 or so in attendance

Lisa Chason facilitating / Durl Kruse time-keeping

1. Introductions

2. Presentation AWARE Meeting Minutes / September 19,2004

by Tom Mackaman, Socialist Equity Party candidate for State Representative from the 103rd District. Tom emphasized the party’s role in challenging the "straight-jacket" of the two party system, and their efforts to present a real alternative to the disappointing positions of both parties. See www.wsws.org for more information. Or email Tom directly to volunteer: tmackaman at yahoo.com

3. News of the Week – Lisa summed it up: "Things are bad and getting worse." Carl Estabrook will be back next week with a more detailed account.

4. Eavesdropping / CU Citizens for Peace and Justice (Danielle, Durl and Jan Kruse) Mark your calendar for the Unity March, an event to highlight the need for fair police treatment of the African American community, better living conditions for African Americans, the importance of getting out the vote, and the value of all people in CU coming together to address these issues. AWARE voted to endorse the march and donate $100 to assist in planning and publicity.

Unity March

October 23rd at 10:30 am

Marchers depart simultaneously from Scott Park and Douglass Park

Marchers meet at the Champaign Police Station

Rally concludes at West Side Park

CU Citizens for Peace and Justice will also host an on-campus showing of the banned documentary footage taken by VEYA members on September 22 at 7:00 pm in the Smith Hall Auditorium.

In addition: Danielle reported on a VEYA forum yesterday on "overpolicing" in the African American community, attended by the Champaign Chief of Police. There are efforts being made to invite John Piland to visit African American churches in CU to comment on the issues that have been raised recently. And finally Danielle circulated a flyer that she has drafted on "Illinois and the Racial Disparity in the War on Drugs".

5. Postcards for Peace is scheduled to take place on Sunday, November 14th from 2 –5pm at the Cowboy Monkey. Contact Peter Rohloff to get involved.

6. Farmer’s Market continues to be successful and an important forum for our work. The group approved adding the pamphlets educating folks about the "No to At Large" campaign to our table. Jan Kruse will order the beautiful Peace Calendars (50) to be sold with other items.

7. Saturday, November 13th is the date set for an educational program tentatively titled: "Telling the Truth about War: Veterans Speak Out." The program will include speakers and a DVD presentation. To get involved email: carolinskeep at yahoo.com.

8. UPTV – Randall reported on the successful UPTV meeting in which policy proposals were passed which hopefully clear the way for regular airing of "Democracy Now!" But who knows what will come next!? Try to show up Monday at 12 noon at the City Council Chambers to assure these new policies are passed and implemented. The appeal of the banned police footage documentary is also on the agenda.

9. WILL appears to be moving ahead on a plan to air weekly community commentaries. Kudos to the working group and Kim Kranich.

10. P4P will take place on the first and last Saturdays of October, but not on the 23rd because of the conflict with the Unity March.

11. Finances: $2,674.61

12. Randall will order 10,000 (yes, 10,000!) "Get Out the Vote" flyers for distribution. Cost: $130. We all get to help in distributing them!

13. Folks will pursue several avenues for getting a wider showing for "Hijacking 9/11", the powerful documentary brought to our attention by Bob Illyes. Perhaps the Art Theater will show it…

14. Upcoming Events:

Tariq Ali visits the campus on October 21, Thursday at 4:00pm , and probably for other appearances as well.

CU Progressives: October 10th at 3pm at the Crystal Lake Park Boathouse

and best of all, Potluck at the Kruses: October 2nd at 6pm (2007 George Huff Drive, Urbana)
