[cu_citizens] RE: [Peace-discuss] Re: [Peace] We won! Eavesdropping charges against Martel have been dropped

agreed. while this is victory, it is not a victory for notions of justice
and citizen awareness of police activity. regardless of what else is
personally at stake for a given individual, the community needs to be
concerned with the larger question of how, as citizens, we may interact with
the coercive apparatuses of our government. this question has not been
addressed to my liking. not even partially. the work is not done. in fact,
if anything, the task at hand now may be more difficult.

proceed, i say.

I'll add to the chorus too. What a cynical thing to do, to let one man off
while another charged with the exact same crime remains charged. Obviously
it is just a political stunt, and yet more evidence that there is not equal
protection under the law in Champaign County while Piland remains in office.

I consider this a major victory for Martell Miller, and he certainly
deserves it. But this is still no victory for justice until the
eavesdropping charges are dropped against Patrick Thompson too.

I totally agree Sandra. It is not entirely a surprise
that Piland dropped the charges and it would be a good
strategy if they want all the public support for
Martel and Patrick to disappear. They probably expect
us to think "job done" and go on to other issues. We
will not!
