AWARE Minutes
Jan. 8, 2005
Appx. 25 - 30 attendees
Durl Kruse facilitating. Sandra Ahten notetakeing.
Finance: Approx. $3000 Linda not present
List Serve: Randall hasnt done additional inquiry. But problems seemed to
be corrected (if you use address of chambana.net instead of groogroo.com).
Randall is going to check into a paid service.
Media Working Group: They are meeting regularly. They have an initial slate
of programming on UPTV. (one hour per week). Shooting for primetime.
Somewhere in 10pm slot, but UPTV will decide. There have been 4 commentaries
on WILL to date (Public Square). You can hear these by going to the WILL
website.
P4P: 23 people, came including 3 new. Next demo Feb. 5, 2005.
CU-Citizens for Peace and Justice
Sandra reports on jail / phone issues. See her latest report on the IMC
newswire for details. She will post link to petition, and ask that
individuals personalize the request for signing petition and send it out to
their personal mailing list. Discussion of cost of mailing $80. Approved.
-Sandra outlines Forgiveness Weekend. Asks for $500. There is discussion
about the fact that Rev. Bevel is the speaker. Carl E points out Bevels
association with La Rouche and Moon. Dan Schriber: Menonite Peace and
Justice Committee says that it seems to be a tactical association with
LaRouche. Menonites endorsed the weekend (they did not endorse the speakers
per say.) Matt questions the $500 amount. Mort and Al want to know about the
other speakers. Mort want the organizers to know that it would not be an
endorsement of the speakers. Rob Scott says the web page will be up tonight.
Rob will send out the link. Carl says the relationship between LaRouch and
Bevel and Moon is not tangential and give info on that. Al attended a talk
on the quad in 2002. Bevel gave a standard civil rights kind of speech. Al
thinks that if the other speakers are acceptable, if the whole thing as an
event but not say we endorse the view of the speakers. A little more
discussion. More on it next week. With an answer to be forth coming next
week.
Hip Hop Rots Your Brain Billboards: Ad campaign by Up Notch Records a new
Hip Hop record company. Susan wants us to give it thought as to the role
that billboards have had in our community. Not suggesting a working group
just saying we should have thought about it.
Tabling: There was a meeting between owner of the Lincoln Square (Tony
Stevens)
They: Want to retain control. We: Want a public space. Their strongest
argument: Carle will be in the mall (in Lincoln Square what if
anti-abortion people would be parading around in Carle? Durl introduced the
meeting success of market in the square
attracted many people, good
communitywouldnt then in fact be damaging to the mall to allow that sort
of thing.
Susan struck by --They: Do not acknowledge any other interest that
commercial interest. Do not acknowledge any social responsibility for a
building that was in part publically funded. They think they are the only
important social actors in the community.
Durl: It was agreed upon that Tony Stevens would contact the mall attorney
and have meeting with mall attorney and with tenants for some minor
interventions. i.e. Community days, city leasing the space to make it public
action, have a pilot project.
AWARE Care: Revivng this working group. A signup sheet was passed for any
one interested in attending this working group that will help decide format
of future meetings.
New Ideas:
Rachael Dietkus: Deadline screening of this film at New Art Theater. Has
been at Sun Dance. Sunday Jan 30 at 4:30pm. This is the 5 year anniversary
on the moratorium of the death penalty. Gov Ryan will be there as well as
one of the films directors.
AWARE will co-sponsor. Will decide next week on whether to cancel meeting
for the viewing of the film. They will also decide about donating money.
Carol Inskeep: Eyes Wide Open A multimedia art exhibit that is a memorial
to soldiers and Iraq civilians killed in the war. Both an indoor and outdoor
exhibit with many components. Carol as a working group is requesting $1000.
The $1000 is to fill out an application. This will be the total amount
needed. She (the working group) wants to commit to raising $500 to reimburse
AWARE, but AWARE will eat the other $500.
Group agrees to put the $1000 toward this project.
Randall: United For Peace and Justice Second National Assembly February 18
19 (in St. Louis) (Singular national wide umbrella group for Peace and
Justice). Randall wants us to send two delegates. Mort has agreed to go. It
is a working conference. Anyone else interested in being the second
delegate?
Rob Scott: Reviving Mutual Aid working group. This is for people who want
to make themselves available when a crime of a racial matter is happening.
Randall says that a mechanism is still on board technically (on the
website). Al says the lists need to be updated.
