May 8, 2006 NSCPJ (formerly NSAWC) notes. Autumn
Franger facilitating.
Notes a collaborative effort by Craig and Marcia

Andrew Lehman will facilitate for the next two
meetings.
Two wordings changed in mission statement: shown by
strike through for deletion or italic for addition. So
below is our current statement
North Shore Coalition for Peace and Justice
We are a coalition of diverse groups working together
for peace and justice, for human rights, and against
all war and other forms of physical or economic
violence. While working for an immediate end to the
war in Iraq is our current priority, we ally ourselves
with other movements for social and economic justice
to combat all oppressions connected to war. We believe
that the motivation for war and occupation is access
to water, land, and other resources, rather than
fundamental human differences.
We oppose our government’s use of pre-emptive war,
occupation, and nuclear threats to achieve its goals,
and its support of other governments that do the same.
We urge our government to abide by its treaty
commitments; prohibiting torture and indefinite and
arbitrary detention (following the Geneva Convention),
and dismantling our nuclear arsenal (as the Nuclear
Non-Proliferation Treaty requires).

Since we have a responsibility for the policies of our
government, we will work to engage the public and
effect social change through democratic, nonviolent
methods. By building a diverse movement, we seek to
challenge those who foster hatred and oppression by
exploiting divisions of race, sex, class, sexual
orientation, and creed.

**************
Designing a brochure for NSCPJ to hand out: A
committee was formed to discuss and prepare rough
draft by the Friday before our next meeting, when we
will discuss the rough draft and outreach
possibilities (e.g. Farmers' Market tabling,
door-to-door conversations). If you have any ideas,
please try to attend or send them along via email to
Marcia prior to the May 22nd meeting.

Completed actions included Betita Martinez talk at NU,

Fountain Square to protest the war.
In case of an attack on Iran, there will be protests

Please act on these. Loosing the freedom of the
internet would make it even more difficult to get
access to information on current events not covered by
the press. Congress is considering a bill to allow
telecom companies to structure network access
according to how much websites pay them. Congress also
considering several bills to end any assistance to the
elected Palestinian gov't (now led by Hamas). (Craig
notes that US assistance to Palestine has been banned
for some time.) www.savetheinternet.com,

For July 4th Parade, We are preparing to put up an
action on the ICPJ encouraging /inviting peace groups
in communities all over the state to participate in
their 4th of July Parades. In conjunction with this
action, we are also preparing downloadable materials
(e.g., stickers) including a variety of slogans for
use by peace groups through ICPJ. Our supported
slogans included "Peace & Justice Are Patriotic",
"Planet Patriots", "Planet Peace Patriots", "Proud
Citizen of the Earth", and "Peace Also Takes Courage".
