Grandpa's letter to the N-G from last June!
>>
June 7, 2006 I chose to spend part of my 81st birthday attending the
Naomi Jacobson town hall meeting. I was hoping to have her clarify
many of her positions on a number of issues that concern me. Those in
attendance asked diverse, important and timely questions. Ms. Jacobson
repeatedly sidestepped, claimed no knowledge, or avoided a response
altogether to just about every question asked. I was just as
disappointed as I was when I attended the town hall meeting last year
with U.S. Representative Tim Johnson. I thought town hall meetings
meant an opportunity for the citizens to interact with those who are
suppose to represent them and for those elected to listen and respond
to our concerns. Neither one of these elected legislators (neither
state nor national) seemed interested in open and serious discussion
with constituents.
Town hall meetings should not be a 25-30 minute campaign speech of
“so-called” accomplishments, followed by 15 minutes of avoiding
answering citizen’s questions and then concluded with a ten-minute
early exit. We make the effort to come to these forums. The least the
politicians can do is honestly respond and not avoid our questions. I
am seriously looking at Tom Abram the Green Party candidate for state
representative this November. I hope on my next birthday I can
celebrate at a forum with a candidate who represents constituent’s
views and also continues to respond to our concerns even if the
questions are difficult and require an honest dialogue.
