SILENT DARFUR: A Campus-wide Performance

Expressive art can be a powerful medium by which to bring light to the
social diseases of our day. At noon on November 10th, five students at
the University of Illinois will be conducting a campus-wide silent
performance to represent the inhumanities occurring in Darfur.

Facing eastward, campus-participants will line the edges of the Quad in
a uniformly colored shirt (which can be worn over one's winter clothes).
One or more blindfolded students will be lead around the Quad's
perimeter, tapping each participant's shoulder as he goes. Once tapped,
a participant will kneel, still facing eastward. When participants are
tapped a second time, they will sprawl their bodies across the Quad's
concrete sidewalks.

Several campus and community media will be contacted to document the event.

The organizers of this demonstration are seeking upwards of 350 staff,
faculty, and student participants. Though the performance itself is
simple, the message it bears will leave an indelible mark on those who
witness it.

Please contact [PGAYED at UiUC.EdU <mailto:PGAYED at UiUC.EdU>] with subject
heading SILENT DARFUR if you are interested in participating in the
performance or would like to collaborate with the organizers to document
this event and make it available to a greater audience, viz. as a video
available to the YouTube-viewing public.
