I thought that John's statement was magnificent. It contained much personal materal, and I respect him for saying who he is and where he comes from, something that is usually lacking on this list. I don't think this conversation will really work unless we confess who we are and what we believe, which I have tried to do but which is completely lacking in some folks who are quick to criticize but very slow to expose themselves honestly.

Robert makes some good points, but what I see is a lack of both a moral and a reality compass in both the Republicans and Democrats. I don't see much difference between these parties at a national level. My impression of Americans is that "ordinary" Americans are decent, and that the higher you go in the hierarchy the more you find evil. This is a hard problem. I'm not sure that there is a solution except for fighting each individual case of evil that you encounter.
