Ah, at last we are getting somewhere. It is hard to argue ideology when we differ on the nature of the humans race, since that nature determines which ideology will work. Nick writes "the masses are asses...  Thomas Jefferson's sentimentally tinged, wishful romanticism obscures the viciousness of life."

I declare for Jefferson's view that the solution to bad decisions in a democracy is education. I suspect that Carl is of a similar position, but will not try to second-guess him on this.

What is your counter-proposal, Nick? From what you write, I infer that you don't think universal sufferage is a good idea. How would you determine who should be allowed to vote?
