> The News-Gazette is not the only paper to publish the Britt cartoon. It's
> appeared in the Springfield Journal Register and is available as part of a
> database of nationwide political cartoons on the internet. I've taken the
> liberty of attaching the cartoon that came out in the Daily Illini where a
> black face character is used as well. I've read the discussions pertaining
> to the need for changes to be made at the News Gazette and writing angry
> letters to the editor is not going to accomplish anything. We are talking
> about people who have worked in the industry for a long time and developing
> a thick skin is an occupational necessity. This combined with the invisible
> social constructions of white privilege makes it hard for a marginalized
> voice to be heard, much less addressed in a respectful and considerate
> manner.

> A basic check of online circuit clerk public records reveals that Mary
> Schenk has been sued twice in connection with her work at the News-Gazette.
> The N-G has had a few other lawsuits brought against them by individuals.
> What would happen if people were to consistently and publicly act as media
> watchdogs in regards to the N-G and other news organizations in this area?
> Instead of spending money on advertising in the Sunday edition, why not
> spend that money on an outdoor billboard which can be just as cost effective

> It's also easy to say that the local paper needs to hire minorities, but
> that does not account for the fact that only 10% of journalism graduates
> nationwide are minorities and frankly they can get job offers in places that
> are far more attractive than Champaign - Urbana. In some respects the first
> line of defense is to hold educational institutions accountable for not
> attracting and retaining more minority students in Schools of Journalism.
> Even within the educational institution women and minorities are often
> geared more towards the 'talent' end of the profession (writing) instead of
> the positions that hold the true power (publisher, editor, etc).
