SPRINGFIELD, Ill. The Illinois Senate today passed a resolution taking
a stand against sending any more U-S troops to Iraq.
The non-binding resolution passed on a voice vote without any
opposition or even questions. No Republican senators spoke in favor of
President Bush's Iraq policy.

The resolution sponsored by Chicago Democrat Rickey Hendon commends
American troops but also says the war has been expensive and that
sectarian violence is increasing in Iraq.

It takes a stand against deepening military involvement in Iraq --
particularly against escalating American forces there.

Republican Senator Dan Rutherford says the resolution was so general
that even supporters of the president's policy had no reason to oppose
it.

Other Republicans said the measure passed before they even realized
what it said.

(The resolution is SR65. On the Net: http://www.ilga.gov )
