Too funny, John -- that's exactly what I wrote in reply to the person who sent it to me!

Of course we all $upport the ACLU anyway, so it doesn't bother me in the least that they're permanently fund-raising, especially when they're doing it on the cheap via email. What does get me, however, is the $$$ spent on slick PR brochures sent via US mail by 'way too many of the good guys (e g OXFAM, UNICEF -- run by Hallmark, these days, can you tell??? -- and Crisis Nursery. Amnesty Intnl's is extensive but less flashy. It's all too Madison Ave corporate for my comfort level, but I write the checks for some of these anyway).

  Hello Aware People,

A friend forwarded this to me, and I assume it's legit. For some reason, it was routed and re-routed a number of times before it got to me, maybe because she and friends all forwarded it a lot. Anyhow, here it is for yr consideration.

In my more cynical moments (which are most of them), I think these petitions are more about the circulating organization getting new members and contributors than they are about seriously addressing whatever the underlying issue is. I simply can't imagine Condi Rice paying even one second's attention to one of these online petitions. And I can't imagine the national president of the ACLU THINKING that Condi pays any attention to them.

We're trying to send an overwhelmingly powerful message Condolezza Rice that rendition -- C.I.A. kidnapping to torture and abuse -- needs to stop. Can you forward the message below to your friends and family ans ask them to get involved?

They can sign the petition at www.aclu.org/stoprendition

   ***********

The feature film Rendition is about the C.I.A. kidnapping of a fictional character, Anwar El-Ibrahimi.

   If only rendition were fiction.

Unfortunately, the unlawful practice of "extraordinary rendition" is all too real.

The real-life stories of the victims are as chilling as they are unbelievable. Black-clad C.I.A. agents, wearing masks, grab foreign nationals, beat and strip them down before loading them onto planes for destinations unknown to their families or governments.

Some victims are transferred to secret U.S. government-operated overseas "black site" prisons, where American C.I.A. officials are solely responsible for the interrogation and torture of prisoners.

Other times our own government asks other nations to do our dirty work, handing people over to countries like Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Morocco that are notorious for torturing prisoners.

Detainees experience unspeakable horrors and squalid conditions. They face the brutal practice of waterboarding (simulated drowning), electric shocks, beatings, extreme isolation, and psychological torture.

America shouldn't condone this, let alone conduct these attrocities!

Sign the ACLU's petition to stop rendition at: www.aclu.org/stoprendition

Then, learn more first about real life rendition at: www.aclu.org/rendition
