Urbana's oligarchs not fooling anyone

Tuesday April 22, 2008

Unfortunate obscuring (spin doctoring?) in a recent editorial kept the
transparency in government referendum out of the spotlight. A little
sunshine displays Laurel Prussing & Co. in an entirely different,
negative light.

Another Lennon said, "Everybody's got something to hide except for me
and my monkey."

Prussing and ilk have got something deceitfully ugly to hide.
Otherwise, why the monkey business? They have grown so smug and
magnificent in their dark tower of iron and stone that they have
forgotten that they are public servants.

Urbana is ruled by an oligarchy. The will of the people need not be
consulted. The powers that be were mildly offended that the citizenry
had put advisory referenda on past ballots. The power bloc perceived
losing their iron grip. But since previous referenda were directed at
national issues, the infraction was minor.

Meddling with local issues under their purview was different. We
tweaked the tiger's whiskers. They were insulted that we, the
underlings, questioned their authority. They surely did demonstrate
that they have the authority.

They have "taken back the township." But, in so doing, they expose
their miserable lack of integrity. Whether they were wise in
eradicating the vox populi really depends upon how we, the people,
respond. Clearly the powers that be in Urbana do not desire the
interference with central government that is implied by participatory
grass-roots democracy. Prussing et al. may shun transparency, but we
can see right through them.
