Make that "but I have my doubts that further intervention would [have] a 
good outcome".

There was a "This American Life" program a while back about people who 
attempted to do good but ended up doing harm, illustrating just how hard it 
can be to make things better rather than worse for other people. The notion 
that we can somehow "fix" Afghanistan is probably both arrogant and 
foolish. I suspect that only the Afghans themselves are up to sorting out 
the mess that we and the USSR made.
