Yeah, Alex has had a thing for Laura all along.  He's quite nettled by the book 
reviewed on the front page of the NYTBR this morning ("American Wife," by Curtis 
Sittenfeld), writing

"Seems incredibly boring. How could one screw up Laura's story so badly. As my 
friend Bill Broyles, who should know, once said, 'Laura cut a wide swath through 
Texas before she married George'. Nothing of that here. It sounds like a clips job."

But Oates' review is interesting.  --CGE
