Tell yr friend John that Obama was not only aware of the Chgo protest but supported the workers against Bank of America. Stay knowledgable guys, credit where it's due...

This is from a friend of mine who lives in Oakland Ca. and is a Marxist.

Nevertheless, no matter one's opinion of the multiple varieties of " Marxists " , his analysis is still quite accurate.

Subject: [socialistdiscussion] Obama's appointments

Comrades,

Attached is an article I wrote for the LPP. It is on Obama's appointments for his incoming administration. Some comrades may not have the time (or desire) to read it all, so I would like to make a few general points.

Initially, I had the inclination to simply dismiss his appointments as showing it was just more of the same, and so it is in some ways. However, what I think these appointments show is a fine balancing act between keeping major sectors of the capitalist class satisfied - especially finance capital - while trying to resolve some of the worst excesses of the Bush administration. Obama's appointment of Mary Schapiro to head the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) is particularly revealing. Schapiro is presently the head of the self-regulating arm of finance capital. Thus, her appointment indicates a turn away from total freedom to swindle, but only so far as finance capital itself is willing to go.

Obama's scientific and related appointments are also interesting. To a certain extent, he is clearly turning away from the approach to science under which scientific analysis must be subordinated to religious and political correctness. Thus, several of his appointments are known supporters of the view that human activity is causing global warming. However, in their alternatives, they also support increased use of nuclear power, whose deadly wastes nobody knows how to store safely. At the same time, they also tend to support "clean coal". This is just a catch phrase, a theoretical idea for how to burn coal cleanly, which nobody knows will work or not. Meanwhile, new coal fired power plants will be built and will go online, while they try to resolve this issue.

His appointment of Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor is interesting in that she is the only "left" Democrat amongst the appointments. Among other things, she is a balance with his appointment for Trade Representative (Kirk) who is an ardent free trader. I also wonder how much the Chicago sit-in strike has influenced the choice of Solis. (Don't forget, Chicago is Obama's hometown, and he must have been aware of this sit-in.)
