The bottom line is what he says at the end of paragraph three:  "The votes
are not there."  Non-politicians seem not to understand that simple fact.

I remember when Dick Durbin was trying to explain that to us once on a
conference call.  Some of my AWARE compatriots were expressing moral outrage
over something or other, and wanting Dick to do likewise.  Dick was busy
counting votes.

Nothing I say here, of course, is meant to excuse the moral cowardice of
those who purport to represent us and whose votes are elsewhere.
