The distinguished Israeli historian Ilan Pappé spoke this evening at ISU, to perhaps 250-300, a full lecture hall. He managed in 45 minutes to give a concise and astute overview of Israel's colonialist history, ongoing. Two of his most interesting comments were in response to questions. First, he emphasized the tremendous amount of academic energy needed to support the occupation: technical, legal, philosophical, political, etc. He accorded significant responsibility to academics as part of the problem, as well as part of a possible solution, both there and here. Second, he emphasized the dangerousness of current Israeli leadership. He predicted an attack on Palestinians much more lethal than Gaza, as well as expressing concern about Israel using nuclear weapons against Iran.
