  This morning they announced on the radio that Obama has won the Nobel
Peace prize. Evidently they said that hed been awarded the prize
because of how he'd changed the atmosphere in international relations
- his use of diplomacy.

Everybody will be aware of the profound irony of the prize for "peace"
going to a president while he expands a war. At least when the war
criminal Kissinger was awarded the prize he had just helped bring
about an end to the Vietnam War. (Not to say he should be awarded a
prize for that, but at least there was a semblance of rationality for
it.) I think this development shows a couple of things:

First is how extremely worried the capitalist class internationally
was over the approach of US capitalism in the last ten years or so.
What the return to "diplomacy" means is considering a little of the
longer range consequences and considering the needs of the capitalist
system as a whole, rather than the immediate interests of a narrow
section of US capitalism in relation to its immediate rivals. I think
they also recognize the precarious situation that president who
represents this change (Obama) is entering into and they believe that
he needs every boost he can get.

The awarding of the Nobel Prize to a president who is widening a war
simply shows how this institution (the Nobel Peace Prize) is nothing
but an instrument of capitalist propaganda.
