I have not read Ender's Game. yet.
I came at the "series" backwards. "Ender's Shadow" is the same story,
but from the shadow's point of view. The shadow is a child, as Ender
is. But this shadow child is from the other side of the tracks. He is
a street urchin orphan living on the streets -- and a scrawny small
one at that. The street urchin is discovered as being brilliant and
sent off to a special school. The school is very competitive, to bring
out the qualities that will help save the world. The school is where
the shadow meets Ender. Ender is the chosen one -- the best hope for
humanity. It is a great book.

>> Ender's Shadow (1999) Orson Scott Card. / poverty, military training,
>> (novel) but amazingly insightful. Powerful. Easy read.
