[Peace-discuss] The war and elections in east central Illinois

Our undemocratic system of elections insures that nothing Illinoisans do in the
November election will have an effect on Obama's ongoing blood-letting half way
around the world, but we can register our dismay to the extent of not voting for
Democrats. There are some Greens - and remarkably enough, even a Republican -
who are much better.

The Republican incumbent in the local Congressional seat, Tim Johnson, should
win easily, and happily enough he's one of the half-dozen Republicans in the
House who won't vote for more money for war in Asia. (His Democratic opponent is
to the right of Johnson on this issue.)

The Democratic candidate for the open Senate seat ("Obama's seat") is a
mobbed-up banker, as bad as his Republican opponent. Illinois voters are tired
of crooks in state office and probably won't vote for Alexi Giannoulias. The
Green party candidate LeAlan Jones is a better alternative.

The Democratic governor, Pat Quinn, is not a bad guy by all accounts, but he's a
fervent war supporter. The Green candidate, Rich Whitney, is much better - an
attractive candidate and thoroughly anti-war.

On the principle that only Nixon could go to China, the repudiation of the
Democrats this fall across the country may put the federal government on notice
that a reversal of policies is essential. --CGE
