The Average (mean) is always higher than the Median (middle value) 
indicating
that the waiting time is a typical waiting time distribution with a long 
tail to the right
that is typically censored as waiting is given up on.



The current unemployment is characterized by an
unusually high frequency of long periods of not finding a job.

But these figures above are based on U-3, which is the short-term 
unemployment,
the one that makes the headlines.  The US Government keeps another set 
of stats called
U-6 which includes "short-term discouraged and other marginally-attached 
workers
as well as those forced to work part-time because they cannot find 
full-time employment."
There is yet another statistic compiled by Shadow Government Statistics 
(SGS) which
includes an estimate of discouraged workers no longer seeking employment 
which was
phased out of the official stats in 1994.
