This Tuesday, February 2 is the Primary Election for all offices to be
elected in November. Unless you've already early voted, don't forget to
vote on Tuesday, and to request the Green Party ballot when you vote!
It
is extremely important that Greens request the Green ballot, for
several
reasons:
* Voting in some other primary may prevent people from
being able to sign Green Party petitions later this year.
* Media
often evaluates a party's strength by looking at the number of primary
voters. The more voters, the stronger the party may appear, which can
help candidates receive favorable press coverage.
* The Green
Party has the ability to slate hundreds of candidates for the 2010
General Election. This could be you or someone you know - but if you
pull a different primary ballot, you could be ineligible to run as a
Green.
* There are contested Green primaries for some offices,
including 2nd Congress, 5th Congress, and 9th Congress. Your vote could
easily make the difference in one of these races.
* Even if
there's not a contested race in your area, a decision to
pull a Green
primary ballot is a show of support for Rich Whitney,
LeAlan Jones,
and all other Green candidates statewide and in your
area.
The
listing of all candidates recognized by the Illinois Green Party
can
be found on the front page at www.ilgp.org through Election Day.
If
you go to vote and have difficulty at the polling place -
especially
if you are for whatever reason denied a Green Party ballot, or if you
are offered other ballots but not a Green Party ballot - please let us
know. Email election-problems at ilgp.org with as much information as you
can, especially your precinct and the time of day that you went to vote.
There were numerous voting irregularities at the 2008 primary and we
anticipate more of the same this year.
After polls close at 7:00,
please come out to one of our Election
Night Gatherings!
O'Shaughnessy's
Public House, 4557 N. Ravenswood, Chicago
Hosted by Matt Reichel
(5th Congress), with candidates Jeff Adams (1st Congress), Tom Tresser
(Cook County Board President), Scott Summers (State Treasurer), and
others likely to attend.
Varsity Theater, Intermission Room, 418
S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale
Hosted by Rich Whitney and Charlie Howe
(115th State Rep).
Look for exciting new updates from the
Illinois Green Party in
upcoming weeks as well, including
announcements of new candidates and new-look newsletters. The people of
Illinois are tired of the political status quo, and the Green Party is
here to help people make a positive choice to leave that status quo
behind!
Phil Huckelberry
Chair, Illinois Green Party
