1. CAMPAIGN & PROGRAM UPDATES

-- Health Care Access Task Force:
CCHCC staff recently returned from a trip to Washington DC to attend the
Health Action 2010 Conference hosted by Families USA. At this conference,
CCHCC staff learned about prospects for national health reform and how, as
advocates, we can continue to demand for real health reform! Attend the next
Health Care Access Task Force meeting on February 11, 2010 (see more info
below) to learn more about next steps for national health reform. 

-- 5th & Hill Neighborhood Rights Campaign:
The 5th & Hill Neighborhood Rights Campaign continues to work hard to get
the toxic site in north Champaign cleaned up. Visit our website to read the

-- Medicare Task Force: 
The Medicare Task Force is fighting for improvements in the Medicare Part D
prescription drug program. To find out more information about the specific
areas the Task Force is hoping to improve, read our Principles for Medicare
Reform.

2. HEALTH ACTION NETWORK - TAKE ACTION TODAY!
Want to take REAL action for health care justice in your community? Then
volunteer for CCHCC's Consumer Health Hotline! The Consumer Health Hotline
needs volunteer Hotline Advocates to work one-on-one with clients who are
having problems with the health care system. Volunteering for the Hotline is
a great way to learn about the health care system and provide important,
direct service to people in the community. Volunteers gain problem solving
skills and help empower consumers. For more information contact Yadira at

3. ASK AN ADVOCATE

Question: Are there any new free clinics in the community? 

Answer: Yes! The Avicenna Community Health Center recently opened to provide
free care to uninsured people in our community. Avicenna Community Health
Center is located at 507 S. 2nd Street, Suite 2E in Champaign and operates
on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00
p.m. They also operate a satellite clinic the first Friday of each month at
the Central Illinois Mosque & Islamic Center from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. Patients
should call 217-418-5888 on Thursdays from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. to make an
appointment. Avicenna currently provides blood pressure and glucose
screenings, one-on-one consultations with a physician, direct referrals to
local facilities, and diet and nutrition information. 

4. UPCOMING MEETINGS & EVENTS

-- Attend the next Health Care Access Task Force meeting on Thursday,
February 11, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church (Green
and Goodwin in Urbana). The Health Care Access Task Force meets each month
to work on health care access in our community. We'd love to see you there!

-- Interested in working for a better prescription drug benefit for Medicare
beneficiaries? Then join the Medicare Task Force on Thursday, February 18,
2010 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church (210 W. University
in Champaign). Call Anne at (217) 352-6533 for more information.

-- ** Save the Date! ** CCHCC's Annual Awards Dinner will be held on Friday,
April 23, 2010 in Champaign. More information to follow. We hope to see you
there!
