Subject: [socialistdiscussion] coming unraveled

It seems that US capitalism's influence and strategy are being
welcomed to the new year by coming further unraveled.

Whether they cooperated in the attempted fire-bombing of the
Detroit-bound jet or not, it's certain that had that plot succeeded it
would have helped US imperialism in its new drive into Yemen. It would
have helped build a mood here at home that would have provided a base
of support for any more direct and overt military action. Now, that
will be very difficult. Instead, they have had to close the US embassy
in Sanaa, although maybe this is a prelude to another means of
building an excuse for more direct intervention.

Then there is Afghanistan, where something like 70% of Karzai's
choices of cabinet members has been rejected. One Afghani MP
commented: "I think, unfortunately, that the criteria were either
ethnicity or bribery or money," (MP Fawzia Kufi, in remarks quoted by
AP news agency.) However, I think this was a bit unfair. Another layer
of choices were wetern educated elite types. Evidently, it was a mix
of choices of the sort that Kufi describes (probably ment to repay
political debts), warlords, in other words, plus those more directly
tied to US and western imperialism. One interesting one who was
rejected was Husn Bano Ghazanfar. This was the sole woman nominated.
She was nominated for the secretary of woman's affairs. She was
partially educated in the Soviet Union back in the day. Her family is
starting up a new national bank in Afghanistan and she, personally, is
a major shareholder in that bank. My suspicion is that she was
appointed as the representative of that family.

The Pakistan Daily wrote an interesting article on the nominees that
can be found here:
http://www.thememriblog.org/urdupashtu/blog_personal/en/23178.htm

One thing that makes it interesting is that it was written before the
rejection. The article says, "Karzai passes first test." Oh yes, he
passed with flying colors.

I think this rejection is a significant set-back not only for Karzai
but also for his US backers. I think they will be now more seriously
considering alternatives to him.

John
