Anti-War Anti-Racism Calendar, April 2010
Recent and upcoming events on the local scene,
taken from last Sunday's AWARE meeting

"Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past."

*Currently, across the country, "The Peaceable Assembly Campaign." The
organization Voices for Creative Nonviolence has initiated a nationwide campaign
to seek an end to the U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan -- and an end
to U.S. support of the continued occupation of the Palestinian territories.
Beginning in September, 2009, and continuing for ten months, we will engage in
both legal and extralegal lobbying efforts (nonviolent civil disobedience/civil
resistance) urging Representatives and Senators to stop authorizing and funding
wars and occupations. For more information and resources see
<www.peaceableassemblycampaign.org>, email <pac at vcnv.org>, or call 773-878-3815.

*March 13-31, Washington DC. Peace of the Action. Camp OUT NOW on the lawn of
the Washington Monument <http://peaceoftheaction.org>.

*Mar 31 (Wednesday) 7pm at the Channing-Murray Foundation (1209 West Oregon,
Urbana) "My Own Four Walls," a free showing of this documentary film with
discussion and refreshments to follow. "Courageous young people, with parents
and without, stay in shelters, motels, abandoned buildings, doubled-up, living
in vans, substandard trailers, or as 'couch surfers' hopping from one fragile
living arrangement to another have one important thing in common. Thousands of
Illinois's children experience homelessness each year." Sponsored by The
Channing-Murray Foundation, The Wesley Foundation, & The Social Action Committee
of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Urbana-Champaign

*Apr 1 (Thursday) 7-9pm Rich Whitney, Green party candidate for Illinois
Governor, Allen Hall on UIUC campus, 1005 W. Gregory Dr., Urbana (See his
respnse to Gov. Quinn's promotion of the war in his Stae fo the State speech.)

*Apr 3 (Saturday) 2-4pm "The Main Event" -- AWARE's monthly street demonstration
on the first Saturday of the month at Neil and Main Streets (hence the name) in
downtown Champaign. Repeated every month since the invasion of Afghanistan.
March begins the eighth year of the US occupation of Iraq; The US has occupied
Afghanistan for more than eight years; and US client Israel has occupied
Palestine, contrary to UN resolutions, for more than 40 years. And all this
international crime is part of the American colonial domination of the Middle
East, what the US military calls the Long War.

*Apr 8 (Thursday) The Buddha's birthday, celebrated in Japan

*Apr 9-10 (Friday-Saturday) Annual meeting of ICJPE, the Illinois Coalition for
Justice, Peace and the Environment, at U-C IMC. Friday evening keynote by
Alexander Cockburn; panels all day Saturday on environmental, peace, and social
justice topics, with panelists including Kathy Kelly, Paul Street, Aaron Hughes,
Kerry Pimblott, Terra Brockman, Gary Cziko, Jamie Kalven, representative(s) of
the Japanese Zenko Peace movement, and many others.

*Apr 11 (Sunday) 3pm - Kathy Kelly and Paul Street on "Opposing Obama's Wars,"
presented by AWARE at the Graduate School of Library and information Science,
5th & Daniel Streets in Champaign.
