>From where I sit, it seems to me that by becoming a political party and running candidates for office in the US (independent of the positions taken or people running for office) is buying into the legitimacy of the current electoral system and its processes in which (a) winner takes all with no possibility of third parties and minority parties gaining any offices or positions of authority and decision-making as is the case under other electoral systems, (b) with no systemic elimination of money entering the process and impacting or controlling the outcomes prior to, during, or after elections by organizations and corporations in particular or wealthy individuals, and (c) with no strong effective monitoring and control over who gets to have a say and how much of a say over the formulation of public policies, the interpretation of public policies, or the implementation of public policies. It seems to be a sure fire route to cooptation and limiting the effectiveness of radical, progressive groups, or any other groups that make up the “99%” in a many that will make it appear as if they have some say or power while simultaneously blunting the radical or revolutionary edge of their demands and impact.

I met a guy at Occupy Oakland who is from Ohio. He was telling me that in Ohio the Occupy movement has set up a political party and is running candidates for office. I thought maybe he was wrong on this, so I did a google search. Sure enough, I came up with this: http://www2.ohiovotes2011.com/news/2011/nov/05/ohio-occupy-movement-spawns-political-party-ar-817254/

It seems to me that here in Oakland, the time to raise the issue of a new workers' party may be drawing close.
