[Peace-discuss] [sf-core] Fwd: CORRECTION: An appeal from Nathan Moore in Madison, Wisconsin

I have dabbled with internet radio and internet TV.

Internet Radio is really pretty easily done. Well, fairly easy, and actually quite cheap.
There are a lot of tools available for internet radio such as Shoutcast/Winamp which can be interacted with
Skype to make a highly viable and useful tool for interviewing and with another tool called Aircorder,
the archiving is also made simple. The cost is that some dedicated hardware and dedicated lines
and some maintenance is needed. Raymond Powell in New Mexico had a great system
for it but that is recently down and defunct but may be resurrected, who knows?
There are simpler ways than what Ray had going. His system was quite complete in
its heyday.

Internet TV is likewise fairly simple. We live-broadcasted the Midwest Liberty Fest from
DuQuoin last year via Procaster. There are other tools such as UStream, etc.

The problem with Internet TV is that video requires quite a bit of bandwidth that some potential viewers may not have which
leads to frame dropping and frame hanging and pixelization but we were able to live stream the Liberty Fest with no real hangups using some pretty basic equipment and some help from Sam Ettaro at RepublicMedia.tv.

In some sense it's a bit like children playing with walkie-talkies but has a serious side as well as being fun.

Of course, the problem with Internet Media in general is that those who tune in are not those who need to be tuned in. In other words, if you are "enlightened" enough to tune in, you probably have already gotten the message, and the great masses whom you might like to reach are not tuning in.

But I think that there are still possibilities, and radio can run in the background while you are working and doing other things and the talking head takes up a lot of bandwidth and tends to demand your 100% attention.

CPB is pretty much a closed shop, and there is still a great need for alternative media.

I still think that the internet offers some viable options beyond youtube and youku and
that internet radio is one of those.

We were being told how vital it was to "save" (= continue to fund) NPR & PBS, the Media of Liberal Reassurance. To that end the plan "to zero out funding for CPB" had to be opposed...

But the effect and perhaps even the conscious intent of the existing system of government funding was to promote noncommercial broadcasting that would mute criticism of the USG, and especially of the current administration (whether Republican or Democrat). We've all seen that happen with NPR & PBS. (David's given some examples.)

The CPB couldn't do that without occasionally contributing to good programming, cultural and even political (like FSRN); I'm happy when it does. But it would be a distraction in the campaign for critical, dissident media - especially alternative radio, now hardly extant - to center it on the promotion of the CPB, NPR, & PBS.

                                (and daughter Violet)
                              Dear friends of FSRN,

Recent weeks have been an incredible roller coaster in the news. One one hand, protests in the Middle East and the U.S. Midwest give me enormous hope and inspiration. On the other hand, entrenched corporate power and the American right-wing onslaught against everything good make me fearful for our future. February has been a month of intense emotional ups and downs.

I had the privilege of doing some of FSRN's reporting from Madison, Wisconsin's massive demonstrations (here, here, and here). Even as a veteran of many a protest, I was thoroughly impressed by the gigantic crowds - as many as 70,000 last Saturday - and the round-the-clock occupation of the State Capitol. Dozens of moments cemented in my memory... Hearing and feeling the crowd cheer when the firefighter and police unions arrived in solidarity; the din and press of bodies attempting to block entrance to the State Senate chamber; interviewing WI Senate Minority Leader Mark Miller in hiding with other Democrats to prevent passage of the governor's anti-union bill...

At the same time, Wisconsin's Governor and Republican-dominated legislature show no sign of letting up. They will not be satisfied until they have given their corporate backers every policy favor possible. Meanwhile, in the U.S. Congress, Republicans have passed a budget bill that would eliminate Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding, not to mention stripping funding for a bevy of other social services while maintaining more than $500 billion per year for military spending. Fox News cheer leads for these proposals and many "mainstream" media outlets do nothing to challenge them.

The CPB de-funding is especially troubling for FSRN. See, most of our affiliate radio stations receive annual CPB grants, and those stations use a portion of their grants to pay for FSRN. Support from listeners like you is critically important, but about 85% of FSRN's income comes from station fees -- fees they can afford thanks to their CPB funding.

Friends, you came to FSRN's rescue in December and January. You literally saved FSRN and kept us from closing our doors. I am happy to report that with your continued support, we will be able to keep providing critically important news coverage. We will continue bringing you the voices of on-the-ground protesters in Madison and Cairo and Bahrain and elsewhere. We will continue asking lawmakers tough questions and providing much-needed critical analysis in today's bleak media landscape.

You can make it possible with your contribution. Please donate today at FSRN's secure online donation form.
