[Peace-discuss] Fw: Fw: [socialistdiscussion] China & Egypt

I just tried Baidu (www.baidu.com) and the keyword "egypt" is certainly not blocked
but gave 5.8 million hits as opposed to 80 million for yahoo. I dont find that there is anything
of interest that is deliberately blocked, just the difference in the search algorithm i think.

I notice that my Chinese colleagues use Baidu, Google, and Yahoo to do searches.

Facebook is blocked but there are ways of getting to it if one so desires.

Chinese citizens and foreigners use the same internet services. Some large companies
buy large chunks of bandwidth and they dont experience any blocking or filtering, but then
they often do blocking of their own to control their workers.

Some of the ISP's provide somewhat better service than others. There are
companies in Beijing that provide "mixed" service which is sort of the overlay
of the services provided by the various ISP's and they promise completely unblocked
access. We just use the standard local service for our home. The office where i work
has somewhat better internet access. I also have a CDMA "Wo!" card from China Unicom
which allows mobile service. It is quite good and very cheap.
I think we pay something like 15 dollars a year for internet in Qixian
and about 30-40 dollars per year in Beijing. The service in Qixian is not so
good sometimes but at night it is strong enough to allow large downloads and
VOIP telephone.

In general internet service is cheap in China and at last count I had the number of internet users in
China approached or exceeded the total population of the USA.

There is free dialup service but I am not sure how many use that.

There is free WiFi in most coffee shops and in places like McDonalds and Mr.Lee noodle shops, etc.
It's nearly impossible to find anyplace urban or suburban without internet access these days.

There are "Internet Bars" even in some
very small remote places, although those mostly are frequented by interactive gamers.

Egypt moved on Sunday to shut down Al Jazeera's coverage of mass protests against President Hosni Mubarak's regime, but the pan-Arab broadcaster vowed that it would not be silenced. Outgoing information minister Anas al-Fikki has "ordered the closure of all activities by Al Jazeera in the Arab republic of Egypt and the annulment of its licences," Egypt's official MENA news agency reported. AP via Yahoo! News - 2 hours ago
Egypt's most prominent reform advocate called on Sunday for President Hosni Mubarak to resign after the powerful military stepped up its presence across the anarchic capital, closing roads with tanks and sending F-16 fighter jets streaking over downtown. The army's show of force appeared aimed at quelling looting, armed robbery and arson that broke out alongside pro-democracy protests and have turned the ... Full Story »
c.. Egypt's Al Jazeera Bans Shows Channel's Key Role
Reuters via Yahoo! News - 5 hours ago
Egypt's decision on Sunday to close the offices of Al Jazeera illustrates the leading role the Arabic broadcaster has taken in reporting unprecedented popular revolts against Arab rulers. Egypt has often harassed the Qatar-based channel since it began in 1996, setting off a revolution in Arab media in the face of state-controlled information, but it had never before tried to shut down its operations ... Evidently the Chinese regime has blocked internet searches which have "Egypt" in the contents.
