Good post, not that most Bible scholars are reluctant to glorify and/or support violence... --Jenifer

Good for him!
Our kids (and hence adults as well) are brought up to honor and respect the military (as is true in most countries), so it is without surprise that there is no dearth of military volunteers, even without the financial or economic "benefits" they may receive in economic tough times.
The answer may be to get rid of jingoistic nationalism, something hard to conceive of;  it has always been part of human nature/society/condition. It is of course encouraged by rulers.
Love, or pride,  of where you were born, or live is something else, but unfortunately too often ends up as a kind of exceptionalism that has unfortunate and inhumane consequences.

you for your service in bombing and destroying Iraq and Afghanistan.
  I don’t thank
you for your service in killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and
Afghans.
  I don’t thank
you for your service in expanding the war on terror to Pakistan and
Yemen.
  I don’t thank
you for your service in occupying over 150 countries around the world.
  I don’t thank
you for your service in garrisoning the planet with over 1,000 military
bases.
  I don’t thank
you for your service in defending our freedoms when you do nothing of

  I don’t thank
you for your service as part of the president’s personal attack force

Thank you for
your service? I don’t think so.
