It's hard not to see the credence lent to this matter as resulting from the fell
influence of identity politics. The Bush administration remember had Laura Bush
in one of her few public appearances say that the war in Afghanistan was
necessary because of the Taliban's crimes against women.
As the late Christopher Lasch (/The Culture of Narcissism/, 1979) said
wonderfully, "Identity politics has come to serve as a substitute for religion -
