[Peace-discuss] War propaganda

In a strange twist, it's thankfully no longer acceptable to demonize entire nations & cultures in quite the way that it once was, Islamophobia aside. But it is still acceptable to demonize them on the basis of their alleged treatment of women and gays, invoking the rhetoric of anti-genocide/Hitler/holocaust and implying that a certain portion of the population is under the spell of a demonic leader, by means of drugs or otherwise. So identity politics becomes another aspect of western cultural superiority vis a vis our official enemies.

And the audience of News from Neptune (7pm Fridays on UPTV channel 6/99) heard David Green anticipate Patrick Cockburn's analysis.

It's hard not to see the credence lent to this matter as resulting
from the fell influence of identity politics. The Bush
administration remember had Laura Bush in one of her few public
appearances say that the war in Afghanistan was necessary because of
    the Taliban's crimes against women.

As the late Christopher Lasch (The Culture of Narcissism, 1979) said wonderfully, "Identity politics has come to serve as a substitute for religion - or at least for the feeling of self-righteousness that is so commonly confused with religion."  --CGE
