This might be an opportunity to press for Congress to do more to end the
Afghanistan war and cut military spending, since these are issues that the
two could agree on...

REPUBLICAN, DEMOCRAT TO ****HOST** **JOINT** **TOWN HALL********

*Congressional lawmakers promote bipartisanship*

** **

          **WASHINGTON**, **D.C.** - U.S. Reps. Timothy V. Johnson and
Christopher Murphy, D-CT, have scheduled what may be a one-of-a-kind town
hall meeting for this coming Sunday in ****Champaign**, **IL****.

The Democratic and Republican lawmakers hope to use this event to promote
conversation over criticism, and dialogue over divisiveness.

“Contrary to popular belief, there are some of us in Congress who are
eager for rational debate and civil discourse,” Rep. Johnson said. “There
are obviously areas where I disagree with Rep. Murphy. But he is still a
colleague whom I like and respect. He and I are also members of the Center
Aisle Caucus, which is an ideal platform from which to advocate civility and
collegiality. In my discussions with people throughout **Central
Illinois**and beyond, there is a single theme that prevails over
everything, and that
is their wish that we would get along and get something done. That’s just
what we’re trying to promote with this event.”

Added Rep. Murphy, “It’s tough to pick up a newspaper or turn on the news
these days without hearing about the bitter partisan gridlock in ****
Washington**, **D.C.****,” Rep. Murphy said. “What you don’t hear about is a
small but growing group of Democrats and Republicans in the Center Aisle
Caucus who get together once a month to build friendships and remind our
colleagues that we’re Americans first. And while there is certainly plenty
of disagreement in Congress over the right course for **America**, the
people I represent in ****Connecticut**** have a clear message: Congress
needs to get over the partisan differences that divide us and work together
to get our economy moving again. That’s what this is all about.”

The meeting is at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the I-Hotel, 1900 S. ****First St.*
*, **Champaign****. A second meeting will be held in the near future in Rep.
Murphy’s district in ****Connecticut****.

ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee. He chairs the
Subcommittee on Rural Development, Biotechnology and Foreign Agriculture.

serving his third term representing ****Connecticut****'s Fifth District. He
serves on the Foreign Affairs Committee and its **Middle East** and South
Asia Subcommittee. He also serves on the Committee on Oversight and
Government Reform and its Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental
Relations and Procurement Reform and Health Care, ****District of Columbia**
